Wisconsin is shaped like a mitten.  Door Peninsula is the 70-mile long thumb sticking out into Lake Michigan; it's made of rock that was too hard for the prehistoric glaciers to crush.

Wisconsin has more than 15,000 natural lakes.  Lake Winnebago is the largest but has an average depth of only 15'.  Green Lake is the deepest at 236'. Some lakes are nameless, and 116 lakes are named Mud Lake.  Originally, the center of Wisconsin was a vast swamp, but settlers drained it and filled it in.

Washington Island has the US's largest Icelandic population.

At 9.3%, Wisconsin has the highest percentage of Polish ancestry in the US.

Wisconsin has the largest state capitol dome in the US.  The capitol has 4 wings and 4 identical entrances.

The US makes more cheese than any other country, and Wisconsin makes more cheese than any other state.

Wisconsin produces more cranberries than any other state.

The first kindergarten in the US was established in 1856 in Watertown.

The Green Bay Packers got its name because it was originally sponsored by the Acme Meat Packing Co.
