Massachusetts - Day 12 - en route to the NE

The Pines Camping Area, Salisbury

today's route
Yesterday's rain showed up plenty today.  Unfortunately, today was when I planned to drive halfway across the state.  Oh well.  Rain happens.  Especially in September (e.g. ♫ "The leaves of brown came tumbling down, remember, that September in the rain.")

As I approached yet another road construction site I saw a sign that said, "Squeeze right."  Ever seen that one before?  Squeeze?

Near Northborough I passed a business named Willikers, and their sign claimed Tex-Mex BBQ.  Seriously?  There's no such thing.  Who are these people?

In Marlborough I got lost - and in my defense, trying to negotiate these small towns that don't think it's necessary to put up highway markers when the road jogs or changes its name is not as easy as it looks on any of the maps.  Anyway, in desperation I stopped at a nursery where the owner was very sympathetic.  She tried earnestly to talk me into using I-495 instead of I-95, said she hated 95 and I'd be much much happier on 495.  But I'd already passed I-495 and didn't want to go back.  Plus I'd already planned my route in my mind and didn't want to replot it.  And besides, I'd already spent some time on part of 495 when I first got to the state and wanted to take different roads.  That's the argument she was finally willing to buy.  (I thought I-95 was fine and guessed she was taking the roads during rush hour traffic.)  Turns out I was only about 3 blocks from the road I wanted.

In Wayland I saw quite a few yard signs that said: STOP THE MONSTER!  Apparently Walmart was proposing to move into town.

Back to US Rt 1, my old friend from Maine, to travel north from the Boston area.  For a ways I was going by a lot of marshland - huge fields of it with the ocean in the far distance.  And then I saw a sign saying Newbury Salt Marsh.  I'll need to go back to get a better look.
